Social Functions

Pre Conference Day

This year Engage 2009 also features a Pre-Conference day! This is a great day to get to know your fellow delegates before the conference starts and see some amazing sustainable sites and appropriate techonology around Melbourne. Please select from the following streams:

1. Tour 1 Permaculture Tour

This tour takes a look at "Melliodora": one of the best documented and well known permaculture demonstration sites in Australia.  The site is maintained and owned by David Holmgren; one of Australia's most experienced permaculture site designers.

The tour will examine the passive solar house, mixed food gardens, orchards, dams and livestock, and creek revegetation and will show how permaculture design can help to restore and improve land and provide for residents needs and enjoyment. Lunch included.

2. Tour 2 Eco/Sustainable buildings in the Melbourne CBD

This tour is great for those who want to learn more about Green Buildings in Melbourne. This tour will take a look at 4 green buildings in the Melbourne CBD and examine the novel ways companies and government are tackling water and energy use in these modern buildings.  This day also includes lunch at the Council House 2 Restaurant - a restaurant located in the sustainable CH2 building with an emphasis on sustainable, locally produced fare.

3. Tour 3 Sustainable Communities

This tour takes will take you to funky inner suburb of Brunswick just North of the Melbourne CBD.  Here we will be visiting CERES Sustainability Park, the Moreland Energy Foundation and Westwyck Eco Housing Sustainable Development to explore how communities can exist with minimum impact using sustainable methods for waste, energy and buildings methods and materials.  Lunch included.

4. Tour 4 Water and Sanitation

This tour will take us to a treatment plant to take a look at methods used to treat and recycle effluent, biogas and biosolids.  The later part of the day also includes a workshop/tour with Melbourne Water. Lunch Included. (Don't worry we won't be lunching at the Treatment Plant!).

5. Tour 5 Energy

The Energy Tour is Sold Out

This tour will involve traveling out to the La Trobe Valley to participate in a tour of a brown coal mine and a coal power station. After this tour we will be proceeding thought to the Strzecleckis Ranges to Mirboo North, a small town with a big reputation for some of Australia's finest micro-brew beers.  After lunch we will continue through South Gippsland to the Bass Coast to participate in a tour of a commercial wind farm.

Sustainability Week Registration

Sign up to 2 conferences and receive a 10% discount for each conference!

This International Conference hosted by the Society for Sustainability and Environmental Engineering (SSEE), Engineers Australia, will be held on the 23rd - 24th November 2009, at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre in Melbourne, Australia. The key theme for the conference is 'Solutions for a Sustainable Planet'.

Additional Information

Intended method of travel (if interstate):

If attending all three days, there are some $100 grants that interstate students can apply for to reduce their travel expenses. Please put your request in writing including name, contact details and your reason for applying (100 words max) and email to: engage@ewb.org.au.
